Scam Awareness App

Security training · Moorhead, MN

The problem

The standard security-awareness model is shame-based. A company hires a vendor to send fake phishing emails to its own staff. Anyone who clicks the bait gets enrolled in remedial training. The employees who get caught feel singled out. The training is a punishment. Nobody comes out of that loop wanting to learn more.

We have found that there are reseller-grade services we can put in front of clients to do exactly that, but the dynamic is wrong. The people who most need to spot the next scam are the ones the system has just made feel stupid.

What we built

We flipped it. Same training goal, opposite dynamic.

The Scam Awareness App is a game with a leaderboard. Everyone on the team plays. There is no shaming email, no remedial enrollment, no "you fell for this" follow-up. It is a learning experience for everyone, and a little gamification is cooked in so people actually want to come back and improve their score.

The team gets the same exposure to real phishing patterns, real scam scripts, and real social-engineering tactics as the shame-based simulators give, but the framing is play, not punishment. Retention goes up because the cognitive load is matched by motivation, not embarrassment.

Result

A piece of original training IP DarkHorse owns end to end. It works for client teams who want awareness without the shame loop, and it works as a credibility tool when prospects ask what makes our security posture different. We can hand them a working game built in house instead of a slide deck.
